Bayonne (Baionia) was given a grant of murage dated 4/8/1242.

This was in the form of:-

De rege Francorum gravando per homines de Baionia. - Rex omnibus, etc., salutem. Sciatis quod licenciam dedimus probis bominibus nostris de Baionia quod, tam per mare quam per terram, modis quibus polerunt, gravent regem Francorum et suos, et alios de terre nobis guerrina; ita tamen quod occasione hujus licencie nostre neminem qui fuerit de potestate nostra et ad pacem nostram, sive sub conductu nostro, gravent aut molestent. Hanc autem licenciam eis concedinnis quamdiu presens guerra duraverit inter nos et regem Francie. Presencium eciam tenore protestamur quod servicium quod ad presens nobis fecerunt, veniendo ad nos extra partes suas, gratis et de gracia sua nobis fecerunt. Concessimus eciam eis quod primas mille marcas ad nos pertinentes, de lucro suo quod perquisierint super inimicos nostros, habeant in auxilium ville sue claudende; et medietatem totius lucri sui residui ad nos pertinentis habeant pro stipendiis suis, el alia medietas ad opus nostrum reservetur.
