In 1272 March 1, W. archbishop of York (Walter Giffard) was granted, by Henry III, (In year 56 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Cawode (Cawood castle)

Giffard, Walter (c.1225–1279), archbishop of York... Immediately after the king's victory at the battle of Evesham on 4 August 1265, Giffard received the highest possible rewards for his loyalty to his king. Within six days (on 10 August 1265) he was appointed royal chancellor, an office he held until he became archbishop of York in October of the following year. (ODNB)

It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)
