In 1332 Oct 22, Johannes de Mereworth (ad requisitionem delecti et fidelis Willielmi de Clynton) (John de Mereworth) was granted, by Edward III, (In year 6 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Mereworth (Mereworth Castle)
Licence, at the request of William de Clynton, for John de Mereworth to crenellate his manor of Mereworth, and a chamber within his manor of Cheriton, co. Kent. By p.s. (CPR)

Granted at York. Grant by privy seal, at the request of William de Clynton.

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Significant later sources are;

John de Mereworth (b. abt. 1280 d. 1366)
John de Mereworth (b. abt. 1280 d. 1366) had done service as a soldier and commissioner under Edward II and was to later serve as Sheriff of Kent under Edward III.
William Clinton was a knight banneret, supported and friend of Edward III and about to created earl of Huntingdon in 1337.
