A guide to the strongholds of the Western English Borderland together with an account of their development and their place in Border history.
Written in a style more of the 19th century antiquarian, with no references, the book is of very limited value to the serious student of fortifications. I suspect that Hugill's original studies where done in the 1930's and that this book was produced on 40-50 year old notes.
