Dundalk was given a grant of murage dated 24/6/1412.

This was in the form of:-

Because the bailiffs and commons of the town of Dundalk in co. Louth, which is situated in the marches near the Irish enemies, intend to enclose and repair the same with a stone wall, GRANT to them and their successors, in aid of the enclosing and repair of that town, and also of paving it, that they may take for 18 years the following customs from all manner of articles for sale coming to that town, both by land and by water, and leaving the same, viz. .
