Old Winchelsea (Winchelse) was given a grant of murage dated 20/7/1269.

This was in the form of:-

Wording
Grant to the bailiffs and barons of Winchelse of murage for five years from St. James the Apostle; for the protection of the town on account of the peril continually threatening it through floods and the violence of the sea.

Granted by Henry III. (Regnal year 53). Granted at Westminster.
