Scarborough (Scardeburgh) was given a grant of murage dated 30/5/1344.

This was in the form of:-

Wording
Grant to the bailiffs and good men of Scardeburgh of murage for five years, to aid in walling their town and especially in repairing the lane of Carteresgate now broken up; on condition that they take no murage on things or merchandise on which customs are being taken for quayage by virtue of the king's grant, until such grant expire. By fine of 4 marks. York.

That the repeat was somehow 'over the top' is implied by it being fined for, although this exploitation is becoming much more normal (Coulson).
