Sandwich was given a grant of murage dated 8/12/1461.

Grant, during pleasure, to the mayor and barons of Sandwich of 100l. yearly from the customs and subsidies of all merchandise in the port there, to be expended together with 20l. provided by themselves on the walls and fortifications of the town and the entrance to the port by the supervision and advice of John Fogge, knight, John Scotte, knight, and John Oxenden or their deputies. Grant, during pleasure, to the mayor and barons of the town of Sandwich that they ship 40 sacks of wool yearly in carracks, galleys or other vessels to take to Italy by the straits of Marrok quit of all customs, subsidies or other moneys due to the king, providing that the moneys arising from the latter which would otherwise belong to the king be expended together with 20l. yearly to be provided by themselves on the walls and fortifications of the town and the entrance to the port by the supervision and advice of John Fogge, knight, and John Scot, knight; in lieu of a grant to them of 100l. yearly from the customs and subsidies of all merchandise in the port of Sandwich by letters patent dated 8 December, 1 Edward IV. surrendered.
