Hastings to Herstmonceux: The Castles of Sussex

in The Archaeology of Sussex to AD2000 (Edited by David Rudling)
Richard Jones

This paper seeks to identify current weaknesses in the study of the castles of Sussex and to identify areas for future research. Despite a number of individual castle excavations, little attempt has been made to understand the development of the network of fortifications built across the county between 1066 and 1500. This paper attempt to begin that task, but does not purport to follow this to its final conclusion.
