In 1449 June 26, Robert Botyll, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England was granted, by Henry VI, (In year 26 of his reign) a Royal licence to crenellate Aycle (Eagle Preceptory)
By the petition of Robert Botyll, prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, ...and has further granted the said prior licence to embattle, crenellate, and machiolate the manor of Aycle and so hold it to him and his successors without impediment, and to impark 600 acres of of wood and 4000 acres of pasture of demesnes in Aycle, and so hold them to him and his successors ... (CChR)

Granted at Winchester. Grant by privy seal and of the said date etc. {by authority of parliament}.

Complex grant of market, fair, imparking etc.

Aycle seems to have been intended to become Botyll's country retreat.

(In fact, the original source given is usually a transcription/translation of what are precious medieval documents not readily availably. It should be noted that these transcription/translations often date to the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries and that unwitting bias of transcribers may affect the translation. Care should also be taken to avoid giving modern meaning to the medieval use of certain stock words and terms. Licentia is best translated as 'freedom to' not 'permission'.)

Robert Botyll (d. 1467) Grand prior of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England from 1440. Trusted adviser of King Henry VI. The knights had suffered a serious defeat in the east in 1444 and the licence may reflect a need to re-establish confidence, both for the knights themselves, and between the order, and particularly the prior, and the king.
