Stafford (Staffordie) was given a grant of murage dated 4/8/1224.

This was in the form of:-

De villa Staffordie claudenda. Burgenses Staffordie habent concessionem domini regis per omnia de auxilio habendo ad villam suam claudendam, duraturam usque in duos annos a festo Assumptionis Beate Marie anno etc. viij, in forma quam burgenses Salopesbirie habent. Set ubi dicitur, 'de qualibet caretta sive carro ejusdem comitatus ferente res venales,' apponitur, 'ferente sal vel bladum sive alias res venales,' et ubi dicitur, 'ferente sal et ibidem vendendas' apponitur postea 'vel per ipsam villam transeunte.'
Teste rege, apud Bedeford, iiij die Augusti, coram justiciario, et Bathoniensi et Sarresburiensi episcopis.
