Shrewsbury (Salop') was given a grant of murage dated 18/10/1321.

This was in the form of:-

Wording
To the mayor, bailiffs, and whole community of Shrewsbury. Order to cause the walls, turrets, and other enclosures of the town to be strengthened and repaired, and the ditches to be cleaned, and to depute some men in whom they have confidence to keep the gates of the town, and to arrest and imprison any of the malefactors confederated together in co. Salop and adjoining parts who may come to the town, as the king is given to understand that they threaten to enter the town. By K.

Rex, majori & ballivis & toti communitati ville Salop', salutem.
Quai datum est nobis intelligi, quod quidam malefactores & pacis nostrae perturbatores, se adinvicem in comitatu Salop' & partibus vicinis confederantes, vagantur & discurrunt in magnâ multitudine, sinistra de nobis predicantes; & villam predictam, quam de nobis tenetis ad feodi firmam, vi armatâ se velle ingredi comminantes, in terrorem populi parcium illarum, & nostri contemptum, & pacis nostre perturbacionem:
Nos, ipsorum maliciae obviari, & securitati ejusdem villae provideri cupientes, vobis mandamus, firmiter injungentes, quod muros, turellos & ceteras clausuras ejusdem villae, cum omni celeritate quâ poteritis, firmari & reparari, ac fossata eusdem villae mundari, prout pro securiori custodiâ ejusdem fore videritis facienda, faciatis; aliquos probos & fideles homines de quibus confiditis, & pro quibus volueritis respondere, ad custodiam portarum ejusdem villae, prout expedire videritis, deputantes: et si quos de hujusmodi malefactoribus ad eandem villam contigerit declinare, tunc eos sine dilacione arestari & prisonae nostrae ibidem liberari faciatis, custodiendos, quousque aliud indè duxerimus demandandum:
Premissa autem omnia & singula, sicut nos & honorem nostrum diligitis, & vosmet ipsos indempnes conservare volueritis, cum omni diligenciâ & celeritate, quâ poteritis, fieri faciatis.
