Bolton by Bowland has been described as a probable Fortified Manor House.

There are no visible remains.

Description

Henry VI sheltered here after the battle of Hexham in 1464. It is doubtful whether anything of the time of Henry VI survives at Bolton Hall, but the date 1550 is visible at the rear. The bulk of the house is Victorian and in decay (Pevsner). Bolton Hall has been demolished. (F1 RL 31-AUG-61). (PastScape)

The old hall which 'can scarcely be considered as later than Edward III' (Whitaker) was destroyed before 1812. Whitaker's description of the Hall is scant but suggests this was a domestic house. No mention is made of anything like defenses.

Granted licence to crenellate to John Pudsey in 1361.
