Maldon Town Walls has been described as a probable Urban Defence.

There are no visible remains.

Description

Saxon burh of Maldon, built in 916. A settlement or estate was extant when Edward stayed there in 912 during the construction of the burh at Witham. It is thought that the burh was used as a temporary refuge. Recorded by Bond as of no post-Conquest importance. However, Maldon remained an important town, with a mint, well into the C12 so defences may well have also maintain some significance. Defences recorded in 1740 as a square vallum on west side of town.
