Also known as, or recorded in historical documents as;
Orkesden; Arkesden; Austin Lodge; Aston Lodge; Ashton Lodge

In the civil parish of Eynsford.
In the historic county of Kent.
Modern Authority of Kent.
1974 county of Kent.
Medieval County of Kent.

OS Map Grid Reference: TQ54246287
Latitude 51.34407° Longitude 0.21325°

Orkesdene has been described as a probable Fortified Manor House.

There are uncertain remains.

Description

Reginaldus de Cobham was granted a licence to crenellate his 'mansum' at Orkesdene, Kent in 1341.

A Royal licence to crenellate was granted in 1341 Oct 18 (Click on the date for details of this licence.).

Comments

Orkesdene was a sub manor within Eynsford manor. Hasted records this as Aston Lodge. There are now an Upper and a Lower Austin Lodge and it is uncertain which of these, if either, is the medieval house site. Lower Austin Court is said, in the Kent HER, to be the manor formerly known as South Court, which would exclude it from being Orkesdene. Upper Austin Lodge, at the given map reference, has a C17 barn but no apparent medieval buildings but is a focus of several paths suggesting an older origin for this house and Hasted puts 'Aston Lodge' near the southern boundary of the parish, which would better suit Upper Austin Lodge.

Minor archaeological investigations, such as watching brief reports, and some other 'grey' literature is most likely to be held by H.E.R.s but is often poorly referenced and is unlikely to be recorded here, or elsewhere, but some suggestions can be found here.
The possible site or monument is represented on maps as a point location. This is a guide only. It should be noted that OS grid references defines an area, not a point location. In practice this means the actual center of the site or monument may often, but not always, be to the North East of the point shown. Locations derived from OS grid references and from latitude longitiude may differ by a small distance.
Further information on mapping and location can be seen at this link.
